In a nutshell
The LWSD Transition Academy is a community based program for young adults with developmental disabilities. The focus of the Academy's program is to prepare students for work and life in the community after their graduation (usually the academic year during which they turn 21). The Academy office is located in the heart of the old commercial district in Redmond. Unlike a traditional classroom, the Academy is essentially a base for our "real classrooms" which are a wide variety of settings in the greater Redmond-Kirkland-Bellevue communities. Our curriculum consists of "typical" activities that occur in these "typical" settings. Students, families, and Academy staff work with a variety of agency partners (DDD, DVR, Supported Employment Vendors, etc.) to plan a successful transition.
